Simply put, creativity can make something simple into something extraordinary. And, when creativity manifests deep within a foodie, you better hold on tight.
The idea to come up with a bacon-wrapped taco or even an oreo-stuffed chocolate chip cookie is mind-boggling to me (in a good way!). That’s why I’ve dedicated this blog post to something I like to call: frankenfoods. You know, the types of food that are delicious mutations of several concepts all wrapped up into one tasty concoction.
I imagine there are hundreds upon hundreds of these frankenfoods all over the world but, for the sake of brevity and your viewing pleasure, I’ve narrowed down the list to four examples.
1. The Cronut
From the mastermind of Dominique Ansel from New York’s Dominique Ansel bakery, these babies have been the talk of the town since their creation. A crossbreed between a croissant and a donut (hence, Cronut), these pastry delicacies are made with a pastry dough similar to a croissant, then pumped with pastry cream, rolled in sugar and finished with a signature glaze. To avoid monotony, there’s a new Cronut flavor every month, like Rose Vanilla in May and Lemon Maple in June. According to BuzzFeed, Cronuts can be sold out as fast as 15 minutes after the bakery opens! People line up for hours and do everything they can to capture these $5 delicacies (yes, $5 each). It would be an understatement to call this an obsession. And, just in case you were wondering, the Cronut has been officially trademarked.
2. The BaconShell Fish Taco
If you don’t love tacos, I don’t know what’s wrong with you. But if you don’t love bacon, I just can’t accept that. This crazy creation of woven bacon is something that belongs in a museum on permanent exhibition. At PYT in Philadelphia, they’re the masterminds that came up with this spectacular food vehicle that carries tasty taco toppings and a crispy fish fillet… the meal of the gods (or Poseidon!)!
3. The Lasagna-Bun Burger
I’m not going to lie, I stumbled upon this behemoth while researching the BaconShell Fish Taco above. When I saw this on the PYT website, it was just too good not to share (on the internet only, of course)! Now, I’ve had my share of lasagnas and pastas but, to use these as buns? On a hamburger patty?! This is just genius! PYT makes a meatball-seasoned beef patty and then nestles it between two pieces of deep-fried mozzarella and ricotta lasagna. Of course, the “burger” is then drizzled with house made marinara sauce and topped with provolone cheese. As if that wasn’t enough, this behemoth of a burger is served with Italian parm fries. #PartyInYourMouth.
4. Oreo-stuffed chocolate chip cookies
I can honestly say that I’ve tried these babies out and I’m on the fence about how good these were. Don’t get me wrong, they were delicious for the first bite! But, as I continued eating the morphed cookie, I began to hate myself a little. Maybe it was the sugar rush, maybe it was the Oreo cream and chocolate chunk combination. I’m not really sure but I do know that just one of these cookies is enough. My friend and I made them by sticking an Oreo cookie inside some store-bought chocolate chip cookie dough. Super simple! We made a dozen of these but only ate two cookies each before deciding this wasn’t such a great decision. Nevertheless, you haaaave to try one- only one! Just to say you’ve tasted this weird, but tasty, merger of cookies.
What are some frankenfoods you’ve seen lately? Have you tasted any of these? I want to hear from you!
